I know it's a really "geeky" thing to do...have a circle of HD TV Buddies, but that's what I've somehow managed to find myself with. The only reason I can think of for this is that I share my excitement for HD TV with these (mainly) Guys...and you know what us Guys are like when we get excited about something.

So, it was no surprise when I picked up the phone to a wildly Bryn in Seattle. I met Bryn at a TV trade show in Seattle a couple of years back and we just hit it off over a couple of beers.

What was he so excited about? Del, "I've got a 3D'er" he enthused! Wow, we talked 3D a couple of months back after my visit to London, but I didn't think he was serious. "Yeah, I went and got a Samsung UN55C8000 55 Inch 3D LED TV" he enthused, "It's stunning, Del"! So, after sitting and listening to him go on about how wonderful it was for a good twenty minutes, he finally said...

"Anyway Man, come down and have a look"

How could I possibly refuse, so here's my review of Bryn's new Samsung UN55C8000 55 Inch 3D LED TV.

First a few words from Bryn..."It was a huge leap to "go 3D" and I knew Teri wasn't convinced, nonetheless I was couldn't hide my excitement when my (sorry, our) new Samsung UN55C8000 was finally delivered". So, when my new Samsung "C" Series arrived, I looked at the box and wondered what it would be like. The sales puff promises "full real life 3D", "you'll be immersed in the action" add to that a jack pack that offered more connectivity than you could shake a stick at and this TV has it all. According to Samsung anyway".

"As Teri helped me slide out of the box...the first glimpse - oh what a beauty".

Indeed it is, it's got a stylish slate gray surround and the blackest screen I've ever seen.

I was awe struck at the sheer beauty of this thing!

First up Bryn told me it took a while to sort out. "Of course the kids and Teri wanted it on right away", "but I'm glad I decided to read the manual properly and do the set up right, even if it took a while".

So, if you're getting a 3D TV, be prepared for some initial pain. Make sure you prepare the family for the config time, especially if you've not attempted a new TV, Blu-Ray and surround sound install before. Make sure they understand it's not just plug in and watch!

Fortunately Bryn is an organized and logical sort, so he did the sensible thing and sat down to read the manual - good move!

This is what he had to say about configuration. "With the a stack of connectivity to sort out, including wireless connectivity to add to the surround and Blu-Ray, it was a big job. There are also a load of "widgets" that you need to "configure". Things like Yahoo, YouTube and Flickr. For my money the manual is good - but I am technical, so I'm used to technical manuals. But it was set out well and easy to follow".

One of the things that attracted Bryn to the Samsung UN55C8000 55 Inch 3D LED TV is that it has the built in ability to take normal 2D pictures and turn them into 3D. Bryn admitted he did find it a little awkward to get this working well though.

"I'm glad I took the trouble to go through the full configuration and to get this right first time", he said.

Why?

When I had a look the truth became obvious. The converted 2D images are not the best. The picture tended to blur quite a bit...I think the technical term is "crosstalk". It was watchable but not much more, consequently our hopes for native 3D weren't as high as they might have been. However, when we switched to a true 3D source and the full force of native 3D came alive...WOW! That's all - WOW!

Although...there is another configuration matter to address. In common with all 240Hz HD TVs there is the "Spanish Soap Opera" look. No, I didn't understand either until I saw it. So, what is it? Well, it's an overblown effect that the manufacturers reckon makes the picture look more like the one you get when you actually go to the cinema. Apparently there are lots of fans! Personally I find that hard to believe because I like the picture crisp and clear - I like full clarity!

So, the Samsung UN55C8000 55 Inch 3D LED TV had to be configured and Bryn again had to dig into the menu system a bit to find the "off" switch.

The effort was worthwhile though as the full native 3D picture was working, it was almost beyond belief - the 3D is just amazing. Yes, I know what that sounds like, but you simply have to see it - it is fantastic!

The picture is robust and crystal clear, the 3D is amazing and the Bryn's kids just loved it. Apparently they've been watching Monsters v Aliens virtually non-stop. The paddle bit is brilliant (yes, it made me jump) and the space scenes at the start are simply stunning. We also had a look at Star Trek which is also just brilliant in 3D, especially when they dive off the rig. There was still the odd bit of "crosstalk" even with native 3D, but it's very occasional. Overall I was very, very impressed. It's also pretty impressive that 3D stays true when you move quite a ay to the side of the screen.

You might think going back to normal 2D after 3D would be a let down, but the full 1080p and 240Hz make for brilliant pictures. With such an incredibly black screen the contrast in the colors when it burst into life is almost beyond belief I am completely in awe of the picture it provides. Deep rich but bright color, brilliant, vibrant, shining, crystal, sharp, stunning contrast...this is without doubt the best picture I have ever seen on a TV.

The bottom line is this, in my humble opinion the C series Samsungs takes home entertainment a new and higher level.

Despite the odd bug here and there which Samsung say they will be sending a fix for soon, Bryn and his wonderful family are blissfully happy with their new Samsung UN55C8000 55 Inch 3D LED TV.

Bryn said "I paid my money and took my chance on going 3D and I think I've won - big time".

"It certainly wasn't cheap to to upgrade the lot - surround system, 3D Blu-Ray and of course, remember you have to buy 3D glasses for the entire family!"

"But for under $4k we now have home entertainment far and above what we had previously. I'm not sure how long the "WOW" factor will remain, but at the moment I simply don't care because I'm loving it - and so are the family. Right now it seems worth every single cent!"

Having now seen the Samsung UN55C8000 3D LED TV in action I have to agree, and I now have to persuade Ali to let me upgrade as well, and that is not going to be easy as I only went 240 /1080 12 months ago!

So, yes, I recommend 3D as a definite "YES". Go for it I don't think you will regret it!

You Should Buy an iPad Tablet. This is a bit of a rant; I have developed an abnormal interest in this device and openly advertise it to my readers. This review is primarily a means by which I am venting about how sweet this thing is, punctuated occasionally with a gripe about how Apple and I diverge on how to create a flawless gadget. Make no mistake about it: the iPad is sexy, and remarkable, but it is not flawless. It is substantially flawless, however, which makes it good enough for me to recommend to you!

Having spent countless hours testing and experimenting with Apple's iPad since its release, it is easy to see how the gadget has stirred such a commotion. My observation is that there are basically two camps of iPad users - those that cannot be more excited with their long-awaited toys, and those who are actually disappointed for one reason or another, with the tablet. These people strangely tend to either love it or hate it.

I am hopeful that I can enlighten you with a sober review and give you some practical input on the product, as opposed to what I have seen out there thus far (people who do not even have it, yet are producing bold, illucid, sweeping and arrogant claims). My goal is to outline the features and benefits, and downfalls and flaws for you, so you do not make an uninformed, or worse yet, a misinformed decision, about your purchase of the iPad tablet. The iPad comes equipped with an Oleophobic coating engineered to combat smears, streaks and oily fingerprints. (While it works great at first keep in mind it is not meant to last forever!) You will see though, that Apple's repellant is no match for your dirty hands unfortunately; that is, if you were as addicted to the device as I was and could not put it down. Comparatively speaking, the iPad handled my greasy paws far better than the iPod Touch, but the iTouch does not have the feature. If you wanted to wash your hands several times an hour to reduced the natural oil present on your fingertips, you would probably completely dry your skin out, but you iPad will be less grimy. Ultimately, it will not be too noticeable regardless.

Beef

Perhaps one beef I do have with the the development of this beaut: the greed pertaining to the pursuit of their minimalist theme. Look at this thing; it's got 75% of it's room free once opened! To start, let's nix the whopping margin around the perimeter. It's a complete waste, and if properly used, could improve efficiency to the nth degree. Furthermore, look at the mileage in the console between the apps themselves. This is referred to as padding, and it is absurd. We are limited to 24 apps, and this is because the iPad is laid out foolishly. The reason this bothers me: the apple iPad could have been an absolutely productivity powerhouse if it allowed more action in the way of further apps. Moving on; regarding the apps, an update released in the fall brought n interesting new feature: will "folders". This allows you, basically, to group relate apps into a folder. Ie: social, music, or travel. You can't access the app with one tap anymore, but you can in two, and they're organized; net, net, it's okay by me. The apple iPad is, strategically, a bellwether for apple. In other words, it has provided a platform upon which the mammoth tech company can again swallow a few more competitors and add another billion in annual revenues (because let's not forget about the advertising capabilities this facilitates; of course this is another story altogether).

It is a wildly popular handheld device which has again transformed Apple and the consumer electronics market. Sales are up and the stock soared months following the release. You have to wonder however, where the company was aiming in their release. Were they trying to kill the Kindle or the netbook. The answer: neither. At first apple meant for us to turn away from the netbook given the iPad'a ability to easily browse the web, email, watch videos and view photos however, you can not even engage in basic word processing with the stock iPad model. You need to download the iWork app separately! Alternatively, the same goes for the kindle. You need to download the buy an iPadiBook app separately as well. Frankly, I'm a little confused myself on this. I cat figure out wait apple wants their product to be exactly. If you do have intentions of using the iPad for work, and plan to be typing extensively, you will want to get a real keyboard. The virtual keyboard is somewhat limiting and is not ideal for this type of work. The keyboard dock is superb however.
